Asian Americans - Emma Reed

Asian Americans is one of the five racial-ethnic groups in the United States that come from a lot of different countries. The 2000 Census reported that 11.9 million people checked one of the Asian categories or wrote in entries such as Pakistani or Thai. (Cherlin, p. 171) Within the Asian cultures, interdependence is greatly emphasized on the children rather than independence. Children are also raised to be loyal and provide service to their parents as they grow up. These expectations of Asian American children are significantly different than Western families.

It is important to a number of professionals to know and learn about Asian Americans so we, as a society, can better understand why they practice particular things. It is also imperative for professionals so they can see and understand why they are a prosperous economic group versus the other five racial-ethnic groups. Professionals can use research to better acquire themselves with the beliefs and values of an ethnic culture before working with an Asian American family. By knowing Asian Americans has the highest percentage of children under 18 living with a married couple will give professionals an expectation and background of Asian American cultures.
